" The history of the United Chung Do Kwan Association can be traced to the formal origins of Tae Kwon Do in Korea when Grandmaster Won Kook Lee, in 1945, established the first formal Chung Do Kwan school in Seoul. Grandmaster Shin who had studied under Grandmaster Lee, emigrated to the United States in 1962. As a result of several public exhibitions of Tae Kwon Do in the early sixties, Grandmaster Shin encountered great interest in his art. Responding to this unexpected interest, he began a small training program. As more and more students sought him out, classes became more formal and what had initially started out as a small informal martial arts club, grew quite rapidly into a major organization of martial arts schools and college clubs, collectively designated as the New York Tae Kwon Do Chung Do Kwan Association. In 1967 the Laurelton Tae Kwon Do Center was established in Queens, NY and became the official headquarters of the NY Tae Kwon Do Chung Do Kwan Association. For more than a decade the Laurelton Tae Kwon Do Center served as a major training center for martial artists in the metropolitan area. It was during the Laurelton years that Grandmaster Shin played a prominent role in promoting the popularity and spread of Tae Kwon Do in the United States.
By the early 1970's the steady growth in student enrollment necessitated a move to a more spacious facility. So it was that in 1974, the Association moved to its present headquarters in Floral Park, Long Island. With affiliated schools and training centers continuing to proliferate thoughout the Eastern states and with branches as far away as the island of St. Martin in the Carribean, it was suggested that the N.Y. designation was no longer an accurate description with the respect to the scope of the Association. Accordingly, on February 8, 1986 the Association name was formally updated with the term "United" replacing the no longer appropriate N.Y. designation. Today the United Chung Do Kwan Association continues to grow and develop under the leadership and guidance of Grandmaster Shin. In addition to the presiding over instruction and activities at the "home school" in Floral Park, Long Island, Grandmaster Shin travels extensively throughout the year to oversee training at many affiliated Association centers and to personally certify rank advancemant for students receiving instruction at these centers.
